Selecting a Source
Use any of the following methods to select a source on the LexisNexis® research services:
Recently Used Sources
The LexisNexis research services store your most recent 20 Sources in the Recently Used Sources box.
Take the following steps to choose from your last 20 sources:
- Click the Search tab.
- Click Sources to display the Option 1- Search field.
NOTE: Quick Search is the default view. - Click the Recently Used Sources tab.
- Select a source from the drop-down list to display the Enter Search Terms box.
NOTE: Running a search causes the Recently Used Sources to become the default view.

Find a Source
Find a Source by Source Name
Use Find a Source to view a list of sources that use certain words in the source name.
For example, take the following steps to list all sources that have the words federal and district as part of the source name:
- Click the Find a Source tab to display the Find a Source field.
- Enter federal district in the Find a Source field.
- Click Find.
- Click the link to the source you want to search.
Find a Source by Library and File Name
Use Find a Source to list the directories that have a source, when you know the source's Library and File name.
For example, take the following steps to locate the dist file in the genfed library:
- Click the Find a Source tab to display the Find a Source field.
- Enter genfed;dist in the Find a Source field.
- Click Find.
- Click the link to the source you want to search.

Browse Sources
Browse the directories under Look for a Source when you do not know the name of a source, or when you want to see a list of all the sources on a subject.
Take the following steps to use the source hierarchy:
- Click the source tab of the topic area you would like to view.
- Click the link for a source folder covering the topic you want to research. A source folder usually has several categories, and contains additional folders for sub-topics. Continue to click these folders until you locate the specific source you need.
NOTE: As you select folders, the source directory hierarchy, which is a trail of corresponding links, appears at the top of the page. You can move back through this trail by clicking any of these links. - Click the link for a source to display the Enter Search Terms box.

For example, take the following steps to find the source for 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals decisions:
- Click the Legal source tab.
- Click Federal Legal - U.S..
- Click Federal Courts by Circuit.
- Click Federal Cases By Circuit.
- Click 2nd Circuit - US Court of Appeals Cases to display the Enter Search Terms box.
